Previously: When Victoria wore her missing mother's heirloom ring to dinner, she never expected a little flower girl to recognize it—or to ask a terrifying question that changed everything.

The Secret in the Shadow

For ten agonizing years, Victoria had lived with the belief that her mother, Rosemary, had been abducted or killed. The police had closed the case long ago, leaving Victoria with nothing but the rose ring. Now, looking at this little girl, the past came crashing back with violent force.

"Why do you ask that?"
Victoria whispered, her voice shaking as she gripped the edge of the table.
"What do you know about my mother?"

Lily reached into the pocket of her beige sweater and pulled out a small, folded piece of parchment paper. She placed it gently onto the silver plate among the red rose petals.

"My mommy told me that if I ever saw a lady wearing this ring, I had to give her this note. She said it was the only way to keep us both safe,"
Lily murmured, her voice filled with a gravity that belonged to someone much older.

Before Victoria could ask another question, Lily turned and walked quickly toward the heavy glass doors of the restaurant. Victoria’s husband, David, reached out to touch her hand, asking what was wrong, but she pulled away. With trembling fingers, she unfolded the paper. Written in her mother's elegant, unmistakable handwriting was a frantic message: "Victoria, they found me. Do not look for me. They are watching. Run."

Panic seized Victoria. She stood up so quickly her chair scraped loudly against the floor. Ignoring the stares of the other diners, she bolted toward the exit. She pushed through the doors into the chilly night air, her eyes scanning the dimly lit street. A block away, near a flickering streetlamp, she saw Lily. The little girl was holding the hand of a tall woman wrapped in a dark woolen coat.

Even from behind, Victoria recognized the posture, the tilt of the head. It was her mother. Rosemary was alive. But before Victoria could even call out, a sleek black SUV screeched to a halt beside them, and two men in dark suits stepped out, blocking Victoria's path.
