The distant wail of sirens began to echo through the valley, growing louder with every passing second. David spun around, his eyes wide as he stared at the flashing lights reflecting off the bare trees. He couldn't understand how they had found them. This spot was completely off the grid, a forgotten patch of state park land that only locals knew about.

He turned back to Jessica, his panic turning into pure rage. He drew his service weapon, his hand trembling as he pointed it directly at her chest. "How did they get here, Jess? Who did you call?" he screamed, his voice cracking under the pressure. "You didn't have your radio. I took your phone!"

Jessica stared down the barrel of the gun without blinking. She knew that showing fear now would only provoke him. "I didn't have to call anyone, David," she said softly, her voice steady. "When I started looking into the warehouse heist, I knew you'd notice. I knew what you were capable of."

She shifted slightly, revealing a tiny, blinking blue light hidden inside the seam of her tactical vest. It wasn't her standard-issue body camera, which David had carefully removed and smashed. It was a secondary, covert camera she had purchased herself.

"This camera has been live-streaming to the state investigator's office since we left the precinct,"

Jessica explained, her words cutting through the cold air like a knife.

"They've seen everything. They heard you threaten me. They know exactly where we are. If you pull that trigger, you are executing a police officer on live television."

David staggered backward, his face completely pale. The realization that his entire career, his freedom, and his life were crumbling in an instant was too much to bear. He was trapped, and a cornered beast is always the most dangerous.
