Previously: When Officer Christopher dragged me into the autumn woods to cover his tracks, he thought he had won. He didn't realize I had already set a trap.

The Noose Tightens

The silence of the forest was shattered by the sudden wail of sirens and the roar of heavy engines. Two unmarked black SUVs crashed through the underbrush, their blinding high beams cutting through the autumn gloom and illuminating the clearing. Armed federal agents spilled out of the vehicles, their weapons drawn and trained directly on Christopher.

"Drop your weapon and put your hands on your head!" the lead agent commanded through a megaphone. "It's over, Christopher!"

Panic, raw and wild, took over Christopher's face. He realized Nicole had worn a wire, transmitting every word of his confession directly to the Internal Affairs task force. But instead of surrendering, his desperation turned lethal. With a panicked growl, Christopher whipped out his service weapon, sliced through the main rope binding Nicole to the tree with his tactical knife, and yanked her up. He wrapped his arm tightly around her neck, pulling her body flush against his as a human shield. He pressed the cold steel barrel of his gun against her temple.

"Back off! I swear to God, I'll pull the trigger!" Christopher screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Give me a vehicle and let me leave, or she dies right here!"

The agents halted, their expressions tense. They couldn't risk a shot; Christopher was hiding too well behind Nicole's frame. He began dragging her backward toward the dense, unlit thicket at the edge of the park. Every step back took them further from the light and closer to the deep ravine behind the trees.

Nicole could feel the frantic beating of Christopher's heart against her back. His grip was shaking, making his gun hand incredibly unstable. She knew that if they reached the shadows of the ravine, he would kill her to eliminate the witness and make his escape. She had to act, and she had to do it now.

She had to act, and she had to do it now.
