Previously: When Clara is sent to the same prison where her sister mysteriously died, she faces down her sister's killer to protect a secret hidden in plain sight.

The Final Move

Brenda stared at the empty heel in disbelief, her face turning a deep, angry crimson.

"Where is it?!"
she roared, grabbing Clara by the throat.
"Where did you hide it?!"

Despite the grip on her neck, Clara let out a breathless, triumphant laugh.

"You really think I’d walk into the yard wearing the actual evidence?"
she whispered, her eyes shining with tears of relief.
"I knew you'd come for the shoes. That's why I gave the real flash drive to Reverend Thomas during morning chapel. He’s already outside the gates, handing it over to the state authorities."

Right on cue, the prison's main siren began to wail, a deafening shriek that echoed off the concrete walls. The heavy steel doors of the main building burst open, but it wasn't the regular guards who poured into the yard. It was a tactical team of state investigators, accompanied by federal agents. The corrupt guards stood frozen as the agents marched directly toward the fence.

Brenda was shoved to the ground and handcuffed, her reign of terror brought to a sudden, screeching halt. As the investigators escorted Clara to the administrative wing, she looked down at her remaining sneaker. The justice she had fought so hard for had finally arrived, and her sister's memory was finally cleared of the lies.

Sometimes, the greatest risks we take are not for our own survival, but to ensure that the truth can never be silenced by those in power.
