“My luggage was lost, Martha,” Katherine replied, her voice calm, steady, and loud enough to carry. “This uniform is the highest honor I possess, and it is entirely appropriate for any formal occasion.”

Martha let out a sharp, mocking laugh, adjusting her floral hat. “Honor? Please. You’re just a glorified administrative clerk, Katherine. You’ve spent your life hiding behind a desk, and now you’re ruining my family’s perfect day just to get attention. Step aside and find a seat in the back where you belong.”

Before Katherine could respond, the heavy oak doors of the cathedral swung open once more. A tall, commanding figure stepped into the sanctuary. It was General Thomas Vance, a legendary retired four-star general and a highly respected guest of the groom's father. As his eyes scanned the room, they locked onto Katherine's uniform. Instantly, his relaxed demeanor vanished, replaced by rigid military discipline.

“General on deck!” Vance’s booming voice echoed through the high gothic arches, shattering the silence of the cathedral.

The effect was instantaneous. Several retired military officers in the crowd snapped to attention. Martha froze, her jaw dropping in sheer disbelief as she looked back and forth between the legendary general and the woman she had just insulted. General Vance marched down the aisle, stopped directly in front of Katherine, and delivered a crisp, flawless salute to the woman Martha had just called a clerk.
