Previously: When Hannah's son Arthur points out a homeless boy who looks exactly like him, a gold locket containing twin baby photos unravels a dark family secret she never saw coming.

The Danger Approaching

Hannah knelt on the cold concrete, ignoring the dirt as she pulled Jonah into a tight embrace alongside Arthur. "Where did you get this, sweetie?" she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. Jonah clung to her, his small body shivering. "A lady gave it to me before she went away," he murmured. "She told me to find my brother. She said his name was Arthur."

Before Hannah could ask another question, her phone vibrated violently in her pocket. It was her husband, Mark. When she answered, his voice was frantic. "Hannah, where are you? You need to come home right now. The adoption agency we used seven years ago is all over the news. The director was just arrested for illegal child trafficking and forging records!"

Panic flared in Hannah's chest. She looked at the two identical boys standing before her. If the agency was corrupt, what did that mean for Arthur’s adoption? And why was Jonah left on the streets?

Suddenly, a heavy black SUV with tinted windows screeched to a halt at the curb just feet away from them. The rear door flew open, and a burly man in a dark suit stepped out. His eyes scanned the sidewalk, locking instantly onto Jonah. Jonah gasped in terror, shrinking behind Hannah’s coat. "That’s them," Jonah whimpered. "Those are the men who took my mommy!"

The man started walking toward them with aggressive strides. "Ma'am, step away from the boy," he commanded in a cold, deep voice. "He belongs to the state." Hannah didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surging through her veins, she grabbed both Arthur and Jonah by their hands and bolted into the crowded entrance of a nearby department store, desperate to lose the mysterious pursuer in the bustling holiday crowd.
