The cathedral was dead silent. Eleanor looked around frantically, realizing that her wealthy friends and her daughter's new in-laws were staring at her with judgment and pity. She turned to Clara, her snobbish attitude completely evaporating, replaced by desperate pleading.

She turned to the chaplain and her officers, nodding gently. "Let the ceremony proceed. I will be waiting in the study to sign the final papers."
