Previously: A soldier returns early from deployment to surprise his wife, only to find her in the arms of his estranged brother. But the truth behind their embrace changes everything.

The Weight of Secrets

The silence in the room was suffocating. Brandon looked at his brother, Joshua, who was now standing up slowly, his hands raised in a defensive gesture. The anger inside Brandon flared, hot and volatile, replacing the cold numbness of shock. Seven years ago, Joshua had walked away from the family after a bitter dispute, and now, he was standing in Brandon's living room, next to Brandon's wife.

"Get out," Brandon whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Both of you. Get out of my house."

Megan took a step forward, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "Brandon, please! It's not what you think. We weren't... we aren't together like that. You have to listen to me!" she sobbed, reaching out to touch his arm. Brandon flinched away, his chest heaving as he stared at the scattered rose petals on the floor—the flowers he had bought at the airport, now crushed beneath his boots.

Joshua stepped between them, his expression grave. "Brandon, yell at me all you want. I deserve it for the past. But don't walk out on Megan. She did this for you."

"For me?" Brandon laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. "You call this helping me?"

Without another word, Megan ran to the kitchen and grabbed a thick manila folder from the counter. She marched back, her hands trembling as she thrust the documents into Brandon's chest. "Look at it! Please, just look at the dates!"

Confused and furious, Brandon snatched the folder. He opened it, his eyes scanning the medical jargon. It was an official report from the military medical board, dated three months ago. His name was at the top. The words Severe Aplastic Anemia and Immediate Intervention Required stood out in bold red ink. The report stated that during his pre-deployment screening, an anomaly had been detected, one that required an urgent bone marrow transplant from a genetic match.

"The military sent this here because they couldn't reach your unit in the active zone," Megan whispered, her voice cracking. "They said we had months to find a match. And your brother was the only family you had left."
