Previously: When Head Chef Thomas found a teenage stranger altering his award-winning scallop dish, fury turned to shock. The boy's secret identity would change Thomas's restaurant forever.

A Ghost from the Past

The silence at the prep station was deafening, even amidst the surrounding chaos of the kitchen. Thomas finally found his voice, shaking off the hypnotic spell of the beautifully presented plate. "You can't just walk into a Michelin-starred kitchen and alter a head chef's work," Thomas muttered, though the anger was gone from his voice, replaced by a deep curiosity. "Who taught you that glaze technique?"

The teenager slowly reached into the deep pocket of his tailored jacket. Instead of a weapon or a phone, he pulled out a worn, leather-bound notebook. The edges were frayed, and the leather was stained with decades of oil and wine. On the cover, embossed in fading gold leaf, were the initials M.V.

Thomas felt the color drain from his face. "Where did you get that?" he whispered, his hands beginning to tremble. "That belongs to Marcus."

"My name is Ethan Vance," the boy said, his eyes locking onto Thomas's. "Marcus was my father. He passed away five years ago, but before he did, he told me everything about you."

Marcus Vance had been Thomas's mentor—the brilliant, eccentric chef who had taught Thomas how to cook with soul rather than just technique. But when Thomas sought fame and corporate backing to open L'Étoile, a bitter rift had formed between them. Thomas had let his pride prevent him from ever apologizing.

"He spent his last months perfecting this hickory-balsamic glaze," Ethan continued, his voice thick with emotion. "He wanted to give it to you. He wanted to mend things. But he ran out of time. I came here tonight to deliver his final gift."

Before Thomas could process the overwhelming wave of grief and regret, the heavy double doors of the kitchen swung open. Richard, the restaurant's majority investor and a ruthless businessman, stepped inside. He had heard the commotion and was flanked by two burly security guards.

"What's going on here, Thomas?" Richard sneered, eyeing Ethan with immediate suspicion. "Who is this kid, and why is he holding a proprietary recipe book? Guards, seize that notebook and get this trespasser out of my kitchen."
