An Officer Stopped a Quiet Girl at the USO Desk, then Realized Her Legendary Identity
Previously: When a young woman in a faded jacket tried to access the military lounge, the officer tried to turn her away—until she handed him an ID that changed everything.
A Ghost from the Past
Claire walked into the quiet sanctuary of the USO lounge, the heavy door shutting out the roar of the airport terminal. She found a secluded corner and collapsed into a leather armchair, letting her heavy duffel bag drop to the floor. For five years, she had lived in the shadows, executing classified missions under the legendary callsign Black Widow. She had sacrificed her youth, her identity, and her family, allowing her own father to believe she had died in action to keep him safe from her enemies. Now, she was finally trying to return to a normal life.
But the peace she sought was shattered in an instant. A shadow fell over her chair, and a man in a dark, tailored suit sat down opposite her. Claire’s combat instincts flared instantly. It was Marcus, her former commanding officer from the black-ops division. He was the very man who had faked her death and locked her into a life of secrecy.

"I knew you couldn't stay away forever, Claire,"
Marcus said, his voice a low, dangerous purr. He slid a glossy photograph onto the table between them. Claire’s heart stopped. The photo showed her elderly father, Arthur, working in his garden back in Ohio. But in the reflection of the greenhouse glass behind him, she could see the unmistakable shape of a black government vehicle.
"He looks fragile, doesn't he?"
Marcus murmured. Claire glared at him, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of the table.
"You leave him out of this, Marcus. I paid my debt to you. I'm out."
Marcus leaned in closer, his eyes cold and unyielding.
"Nobody ever really gets out of Fleet Operations, Black Widow. I need one last extraction in Europe. Do this, and your father stays safe. Refuse, and he will pay the price for your retirement."
”Refuse, and he will pay the price for your retirement."
