They Mocked the Old Veteran at the Firing Range Until He Revealed His Dark Secret
Previously: When a smug young soldier mocks a weathered 66-year-old veteran at a desert shooting competition, he has no idea he just challenged a legendary ghost unit sniper.
The Final Shot
Arthur didn't hesitate. Despite his age, his elite instincts took over instantly. He grabbed his rifle and ran out into the blinding sunlight, heading for the high ridge overlooking the server facility. Leo had already breached the secure doors and was running toward an armored getaway vehicle parked near the back fence. He had a hard drive clutched tightly in his hand.
From the ridge, Arthur set up his rifle. The wind was howling now, kicking up clouds of stinging dust. Through the scope, Arthur could see Leo frantically trying to start the vehicle's engine. If he reached the main highway, he would disappear into the desert forever.

Arthur took a deep breath, ignoring the protest of his aching joints. He didn't aim for Leo. Instead, he aimed for the vehicle's fuel line, a tiny target hidden beneath the chassis. He squeezed the trigger.
The bullet struck with pinpoint precision. A spark ignited the leaking fuel, and the vehicle's engine block exploded in a spectacular burst of fire, throwing Leo violently onto the sand. Dazed and bruised, the young soldier looked up to see Arthur standing over him, the rifle still smoking.
"You thought we were weak because we got old," Arthur said, his voice cold as ice. "But you forgot that we survived because we were the best."
Military police swarmed the area, pinning Leo to the ground and recovering the stolen hard drive. Colonel Vance walked up, placing a hand on Arthur's shoulder. "Thank you, old friend. The Ghost Unit lives on." Arthur smiled faintly, pulling his sleeve back down over his tattoo. He had proven that true honor and skill never truly retire; they just wait for the right moment to strike back.
