The Gala That Changed Everything

The chandeliers of Founders Hall glittered like cold stars, casting harsh light on the marble floor where I stood, clutching the only thing my mother left me—a carved ivory knight, split in two. I was seven years old, an orphan, and tonight I had been invited to the Pembroke Academy gala by mistake. Or so I thought.

Dean Hargreaves, with his gold monocle and tweed suit, had been watching me from the moment I entered. His sneer was a weapon, and he used it well. "Go back to the kitchen," he said, his voice dripping with venom, pointing toward the service exit.

My heart pounded. I had seen the other boy across the room—the one in the burgundy velvet blazer, holding a matching ivory king. I had seen my own face on him. The same dark wavy hair, the same eyes. But before I could speak, the dean stepped closer, blocking my view.

"Did you hear me, boy?" he hissed. "This is no place for you."

I stepped back, tears burning in my eyes. My hand went to the chain around my neck, where the half-medallion hung—a broken circle with a ruby crest. I held it up, my lower lip trembling, and said, "My twin has the other."

The room went silent.

Across the hall, Evan—the boy who was my mirror—gasped and pulled his parents forward. Julian Rosewood, the billionaire patriarch, and his wife Victoria dropped to their knees before me. "Wait... show me that medallion," she whispered, her voice cracking.

I extended my arm, revealing the diamond-shaped birthmark on my wrist. Evan did the same. The matching marks were undeniable. And when we pressed our medallions together, the ruby crest locked perfectly into one.

Julian wept aloud. "The hospital lied to us."

Before anyone could react, Dean Hargreaves backed away, his face pale with terror. He knew something. I could see it in his eyes.

Then Victoria gathered Evan and me into her arms, her cashmere coat soaking up my tears. "We found our missing twin," she sobbed.

"But the dean's face... it told me this was only the beginning."

As the gala erupted in whispers, I looked into Evan's eyes, seeing my own reflection. We had found each other. But the truth of why we were separated was still buried in lies.

The dean had disappeared into the crowd. And somewhere in that crowd, I knew, was the answer to a question I hadn't even known to ask.

Why did they take me from them?
