The sterile neonatal intensive care unit was filled with the oppressive, rhythmic hum of life-support machines. Emily sat huddled in a plastic chair, her eyes red and swollen from hours of weeping. Through the thick glass window of the incubator, her newborn baby, Leo, lay fragile and pale, his tiny chest barely moving. Outside the room, John, her husband, stood with his forehead pressed against the cold glass, his knuckles white as he gripped the ledge. Between them stood ten-year-old Toby, his blonde hair caught in the harsh fluorescent lighting of the hospital.

Suddenly, the steady beep of the heart monitor fractured into a continuous, high-pitched flatline.

Emily’s world collapsed. She let out a piercing cry of anguish, dropping to her knees on the cold tile floor. Outside, John began frantically pounding on the glass, his muffled screams echoing in the corridor as he desperately tried to summon help. But inside the room, Toby did not panic. With an unnatural, serene calm, the young boy stepped closer to the incubator. He slid his hand through the side port and gently laid his palm over his baby brother’s still chest.

"He is breathing," Toby said softly, his voice cutting through the chaotic alarms.

At that exact moment, the heavy door flew open. Matthew, a nurse dressed in teal scrubs, rushed inside with an emergency cart. He bypassed the weeping mother and went straight to the crib, his fingers instantly finding the newborn's tiny neck. Matthew’s eyes widened in utter shock.

"He has a pulse!" Matthew exclaimed, his voice filled with disbelief.

The flatline on the monitor suddenly jumped, resuming a strong, steady rhythm. Emily looked up from the floor, her tears freezing on her cheeks, while John stopped pounding on the glass, utterly stunned by the miracle that had just unfolded before their eyes.
