The Weight of the Blade

The wind howled through the narrow, stone canyon of Oakhaven, carrying a thick, icy fog that clung to the jagged cliffs. At the center of the gorge stood a massive, cracked boulder, and wedged deep within its ancient heart was the legendary sword of the lost line. It was a blade of pure myth, waiting for the true heir of the realm. Today, the greatest warriors had gathered, but none had moved it even an inch.

Borin, a massive, red-bearded warrior clad in heavy dark steel armor, stepped forward. He was the champion of the southern provinces, a man whose strength was whispered of in taverns across the land. Gritting his teeth, he wrapped his gloved hands around the leather hilt. He pulled. His face turned a deep crimson, and the veins in his thick neck bulged violently as he strained against the stone. But the sword remained absolutely still, locked in its stony prison.

"If I couldn't pull it out, no one can," Borin grumbled, releasing his grip and turning back to his men with a bitter scowl.

The crowd of noble knights murmured in agreement. If the strongest man in the kingdom had failed, the prophecy was surely a lie. But then, a shadow moved from the back of the crowd. Arthur, a small, soot-stained young stable boy in a tattered green tunic, stepped into the clearing. The knights began to chuckle, mocking the boy's audacity. Arthur ignored them, his eyes locked on the golden hilt. He stood before the stone, feeling a strange, ancient warmth radiating from the metal.

"I am Arthur. And I am going to claim you," he whispered with quiet resolve.

He reached out, his grimy, blistered hand firmly gripping the leather-wrapped hilt. The moment his fingers closed around it, the canyon fell into a sudden, breathless silence.
