The grand ballroom of the Bellevue Hotel was bathed in a warm, golden glow, its high-ceilinged walls draped in deep, wine-red velvet. It was the annual Vanguard Gala, the most exclusive social event of the year, hosted by Richard Vance, a powerful defense contractor, and his wife, Eleanor. To the high-society crowd, the Vances were the epitome of success and prestige. But beneath the glittering surface lay a bitter family secret. Fifteen years ago, they had disowned their daughter, Sarah, for refusing to conform to their elitist expectations and choosing a career in the military instead.

Tonight, Richard stood near the stage in a tailored tuxedo, sipping champagne and basking in the admiration of his peers. Beside him, Eleanor adjusted her diamond necklace, her wavy blonde hair catching the light. They believed they had erased Sarah from their lives forever. "Major General!"

The announcement echoed off the high ceilings. Richard’s champagne glass slipped from his hand, shattering against the polished floor. Eleanor gasped, her face turning pale as she stared in absolute disbelief. Sarah stood tall, a calm, proud smile gracing her lips. A bright camera flash illuminated her face as she looked directly at her stunned parents.
