Mark’s panic quickly turned to desperation. He knew the layout of this park; it was isolated, a place where radio signals were notoriously weak. It was a prototype she had borrowed from the tech division, completely independent of the standard department server. For the last twenty minutes, every word Mark had spoken, and the sight of her bound to the tree, had been streaming live to the Captain and the entire SWAT dispatch unit.

"They know everything, Mark," Rachel said, her voice echoing in the quiet clearing. "They’ve seen the ropes. They heard your confession. It's over."

Realizing the gravity of his situation, Mark’s face contorted with rage. He drew his service weapon, pointing it directly at her chest. His hand shook violently as the sound of slamming car doors and shouting officers echoed from the edge of the woods. "I’m not going to jail, Rachel," he hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "If they're going to lock me away, I'm making sure you can't testify."

Rachel stared down the barrel of the gun. She could hear the rustle of leaves as tactical officers rushed toward their position, but they were still too far. She had only seconds to de-escalate a desperate man with nothing left to lose.
