Previously: When Officer Ashley was betrayed and bound to a tree by her trusted partner, she knew her chances were slim—until a sudden flash of lights changed everything.

The Noose Tightens

Panic seized Brian. He knew that if the backup officers found him here with a bound colleague, his career and his freedom were over. He whipped his service weapon out of its holster, his hands trembling as he turned back to Ashley. He pressed the cold steel barrel of the gun directly against her collarbone.

"Who did you call?" he hissed, his eyes darting frantically between her and the approaching lights. "If you don't tell me right now, I swear I'll pull this trigger before they even step out of their cars!"

Ashley didn't blink. "I didn't call anyone, Brian. But the Chief has been listening to us for the last forty-five minutes."

She nodded slightly toward her collar. Tucked neatly beneath the heavy fabric of her uniform's inner lining was a tiny, state-of-the-art tactical wire. It was a model that bypassed standard radio frequencies, transmitting directly to the precinct's internal affairs division.

"I knew you'd try something like this," Ashley whispered, her voice steady despite the gun pressed against her chest. "I didn't confront you in the breakroom to warn you. I did it to bait you. Every word you said on the drive out here, every threat you just made—it's all been recorded and logged on the department secure server."

Brian's jaw dropped. The realization that he had walked directly into a trap paralyzed him. The distant sound of car doors slamming and heavy boots crunching over dry leaves echoed through the quiet reserve. K9 units began to bark in the distance.

"Drop the weapon, Brian!" a booming voice echoed through a megaphone. It was Chief Henderson, leading the tactical response team. "Step away from Officer Ashley with your hands on your head!"

Brian looked down at Ashley, a desperate, wild look in his eyes. He was cornered, and a cornered predator is always the most dangerous. He tightened his grip on the trigger.

He tightened his grip on the trigger.
