The Spill That Broke the Silence

The Regency Breakfast Room glittered under crystal sconces, the warm light bouncing off bone-china teacups and damask linens. Lily Ashworth moved carefully, her eight-month belly a soft curve beneath her black server dress. She had learned to read the room before entering it, and this room screamed danger.

Miranda Thorne sat at the VIP table like a queen surveying her court. Her emerald satin blazer was immaculate, her dark bob sharp as a blade. She had been watching Lily all morning, her lips curled in a smile that never reached her eyes.

“More coffee,” Miranda said, not even looking up. Lily complied, her hands steady despite the ache in her back. But as she reached across the table, Miranda’s hand shot out and knocked the glass bowl of berry compote onto the marble floor.

Crimson berries splattered across the white stone. Glass shards glittered like tiny knives. The entire room went silent.

Miranda stood slowly, pointing at the mess with a manicured nail. “Bend down and scrub it,” she said, her voice unhurried, almost bored.

Lily’s hand flew to her belly. She could feel Toby’s small hand gripping her apron hem, his wide eyes fixed on the scene. She had promised herself she would never let her son see her humiliated, but the weight of her pregnancy made bending impossible.

“I’ll get a mop,” Lily said, her voice trembling. “I’ll clean it up.”

“No,” Miranda snapped. “You will kneel and use your hands. I want to see you scrub.”

Toby stepped forward, his little body shaking. “Stop hurting my pregnant mommy!” he cried, tears streaming down his chubby cheeks.

Miranda laughed, a cold, brittle sound. She reached out to shove Lily’s shoulder, but before her fingers could make contact, a tall figure filled the doorway.

Viktor Ashworth moved like a shadow, his midnight-blue tuxedo cutting through the tension. He caught Miranda’s wrist mid-air, his grip iron. “Step away from my wife,” he said, his voice low and dangerous.

Miranda’s eyes went wide. “Your wife?” she sputtered. “This—this waitress?”

Viktor didn’t answer. He turned to the Chief Operating Officer, who had appeared beside him, holding a glowing platinum tablet. The COO bowed and held it up, displaying Lily’s portrait as the sole owner of Sovereign Manor Resort.

“She owns this entire hotel,” the COO said.

Miranda’s face went pale. “That’s impossible.”

Viktor draped his jacket over Lily’s shoulders, the warmth seeping into her skin. He lifted Toby into his other arm, cradling him like a treasure. “Remove them from my hotel,” he said to security.

Four guards stepped forward, escorting Miranda toward the exit. She was still sputtering, but her voice faded as the doors closed behind her.

Lily leaned into Viktor, her body trembling. “How did you know?” she whispered.

He kissed her forehead. “I always know, love.”

But as they walked out together, Lily caught a glimpse of Miranda through the glass doors, already pulling out her phone. The fight wasn’t over. It was just beginning.
