When the Prison's Most Feared Giant Confronted Me, I Refused to Back Down
The Face-Off in the Yard
The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the cracked concrete yard of Stonehaven Penitentiary. High above, the razor wire hummed in the dry wind, and the armed guards in the watchtowers kept their rifles trained on the sea of orange jumpsuits below. Paige stood near the rusty bleachers, her slender frame clad in a blue tank top and orange prison trousers. She had only been in the facility for three weeks, a victim of a corrupt frame-up meant to protect her younger brother from a ruthless syndicate. But to the rest of the inmates, she was just fresh meat.
A sudden hush fell over the yard as a massive shadow stretched across the concrete, blocking out the harsh light. Garrett, the undisputed king of the yard, stepped into her path. He was a colossal, heavily tattooed man with curly brown hair and a rugged, untamed beard. He carried himself with the absolute confidence of a man who ruled by fear. The surrounding crowd of inmates quickly formed a circle, eager to witness the demolition of the new girl.

"Well, show us what you're capable of," Garrett sneered, his voice dripping with mockery.
He grinned down at her, expecting Paige to cower, to beg, or to burst into tears. Instead, Paige slowly tilted her head up, locking her dark eyes onto his. She didn't flinch. She didn't take a single step back. Her breathing remained slow and measured, her face an unreadable mask of absolute defiance. Angered by her lack of fear, Garrett flexed his massive biceps, throwing his head back to let out a menacing, animalistic roar that echoed off the weathered concrete walls. The crowd cheered, anticipating violence. Yet, when the roar subsided, Paige still stood completely unfazed, staring directly into the giant's eyes with an icy, unbreakable calm.
