Vance stepped forward, a sickening smile playing on his lips. He leaned in close to Paige, his voice dropping to a low whisper that chilled her to the bone. He explained that Garrett was his personal enforcer, used to keep the inmates in line and secure the Warden’s illegal drug trade inside the walls. Paige's refusal to bow had threatened their entire operation. By defending herself, she had played right into their hands. Vance declared she would be taken to solitary confinement for assaulting an inmate—a place from which nobody ever returned intact. As the guards stepped forward to grab her, Paige realized she was completely trapped in a corrupt system designed to destroy her.
