Previously: Standing in the cold city rain, Sarah spotted her estranged grandfather and her runaway brother. A confrontation across the wet pavement would soon expose a decades-old family lie.
Unearthing the Family Lies
Sarah didn't hesitate. She bolted across the wet avenue, her boots splashing through deep puddles as she ignored the oncoming glare of distant headlights.
"Leo!" she cried out, her voice cutting through the steady patter of the rain. Both the teenager and the elderly man turned in unison. Leo’s face paled beneath his hood, while Arthur slowly rose from the bench, his frail frame trembling as he leaned on a wooden cane.
Panic and anger warred within Sarah’s chest as she stood between them.
"What is this?" she demanded, glaring at Arthur before turning to her brother. "Leo, why are you here with him? This man turned his back on mom when she needed him most! He let us starve!"

Leo stepped forward, his eyes shining with tears.
"No, Sarah, that's not what happened," he pleaded, reaching into his pocket. "We’ve been living a lie. Look at this."He handed her a damp, faded envelope. Inside were letters dating back fifteen years, all written in a handwriting Sarah recognized instantly—their late father’s.
Arthur spoke, his voice cracked and heavy with emotion.
"Your father was a deeply troubled man, Sarah. He kept you and your mother away from me. He threatened that if I ever tried to contact her directly, he would take you both out of the country where I would never find you. He extorted millions from me, promising it was for your mother's medical bills, but he kept every cent for his own vices."
Sarah shook her head, her world spinning.
"No, my father loved us. He wouldn't do that to Mom," she whispered, though the cold, hard evidence was resting in her trembling hands.
"I found these in Dad's old lockbox in the attic last week," Leo sobbed. "Arthur didn't abandon us, Sarah. Dad hid us from him. Arthur has been searching for us for years."
”Arthur has been searching for us for years."
