Previously: When Owen risked his life to pull a drowning wolf from a frozen river, he expected a fight for survival. Instead, the pack followed him home, bringing a shocking family secret.

The Guardian of the Valley

The tension in the cabin was suffocating, but before Vance could pull the trigger, a deep, resonant howl echoed from just outside the window. The shadows of the wolf pack suddenly blocked the light, their massive shapes pacing across the porch. The rescued wolf on the floor let out a low, defensive growl, standing up on shaky legs and baring its teeth at Vance. The hunter’s confident smirk vanished, replaced by sudden, pale panic as he realized he was surrounded by a dozen apex predators.

"Tell them to back off, Owen!" Vance stammered, his rifle shaking as he looked toward the window where the alpha wolf glared through the glass. Owen realized the pack hadn't followed to attack him—they had followed to protect their own, and perhaps to finish what Liam had started. Owen stood tall. "They aren't my pets, Vance. But they know exactly who you are, and they know what you did to my brother."

Terrified of the wolves breaking through the glass, Vance dropped his rifle and confessed to his crimes, admitting he had forced Liam off the cliff five years ago but had lost the deed when Liam's loyal wolf companion fled with it. Owen used his satellite phone to call the state troopers, who arrived to arrest the trembling developer. With Vance behind bars, Owen followed the wolf to a hollow oak near Liam's old campsite, where he recovered the deed and the evidence that secured his family's land forever.

Standing on the edge of the snowy ridge, Owen watched the wolf pack disappear back into the misty forest, knowing his brother was finally at peace, and that he would never walk these woods alone again. Sometimes, the wildest souls are the ones that save us when we are most lost.
