Previously: When eighteen-year-old Garrett stopped to help a crashed biker on a foggy night, he never expected the dying stranger to hold the key to his family's darkest secret.

Secrets in the Mist

Garrett's heart stopped. He stared from the broken silver ring to the rugged face of the man lying in the wet grass. The pieces of a puzzle he had been trying to solve his entire life suddenly fell into place. The crooked smile, the deep blue eyes—it was the man from the single, faded photograph his mother had kept hidden away.

"Who are you?"
Garrett whispered, his hands beginning to shake so violently that he could barely keep pressure on the wound.
"Tell me the truth."

The man closed his eyes, a tear cutting a clean path through the grime on his cheek.

"My name is Shane, Garrett,"
he choked out.
"I'm your father."

Anger, hot and sudden, flared in Garrett's chest.

"Why did you leave us?"
he demanded, his voice cracking with years of built-up pain.
"She's gone, Shane. My mom died waiting for you to come back!"

Shane gasped, his face turning deathly pale. He grabbed Garrett's wrist with desperate strength.

"I didn't leave because I wanted to,"
he pleaded.
"Your grandfather... he hated me. He told me the apartment fire took both of you. He showed me fake death certificates. I spent eighteen years believing my family was dead. I only found out the truth yesterday when I found an old letter in his estate."

Before Garrett could process the devastating lie that had kept his family apart, a sudden roar of heavy engines echoed through the foggy valley. Blinding headlights cut through the trees as three dark SUVs sped down the highway, stopping abruptly at the edge of the ditch.

Shane's eyes filled with sheer terror.

"You have to run, Garrett,"
he hissed, trying to push his son away.
"My old club... they followed me. If they find you with me, they will kill us both!"
