Unable to speak without screaming, Jacob turned on his heel and walked out of the house. He sat on the front porch steps, his head buried in his hands as he tried to make sense of the nightmare. Moments later, Kevin slipped out of the front door. He didn't look at Jacob, only mumbling a quick apology before scrambling to his truck and driving away. He was a coward, leaving Lauren to face the storm alone.

When Lauren came outside, she threw herself at Jacob’s feet, weeping and pleading for forgiveness. She claimed it was a momentary lapse in judgment, born of loneliness and isolation. But Jacob's trust was already dead. As she begged, her phone buzzed loudly on the porch table. A text notification from Kevin flashed on the screen: “Did he see the positive test in the bathroom yet?”

The words chilled Jacob to the bone. He pushed Lauren aside and marched back into the house, heading straight for the master bathroom. There, in the trash can, lay a positive pregnancy test. Jacob’s stomach churned. He had been deployed for nine months; the child could not possibly be his. The realization that his wife was carrying his best friend's child felt like a physical blow.

Jacob packed a small suitcase and checked into a local motel, refusing to answer Lauren's endless calls. The next morning, his phone rang again. This time, it was his mother-in-law, Helen. Expecting a defensive lecture, Jacob was stunned when Helen spoke in a quiet, defeated tone.

“Jacob, you need to know the truth,” Helen whispered. “Lauren and Kevin didn't just start this while you were away. They have been seeing each other since before you married her. Kevin is the one she wanted, but his family threatened to disown him if he married her. You were just her safe choice.”

The revelation made Jacob’s blood run cold. His entire marriage had been a lie, a carefully constructed illusion.
