Previously: When Officer Walker pulled over an elderly man in a classic sedan, he expected an easy arrest. He didn't expect to face the one man who could end his career.

The Shifting Power

Officer Walker lifted the heavy steel briefcase from the trunk, his eyes narrowing as he felt its weight. He brought it over to the hood of the car, slamming it down onto the dusty metal. He demanded the combination, but Walter remained silent, staring ahead at the endless horizon. Frustrated by the older man's defiance, Walker grabbed his radio and called for supervisor backup, claiming he had detained a highly suspicious individual refusing to comply with a lawful search.

Within fifteen minutes, the gravel crunched as a second patrol car pulled up behind them. Sergeant Miller, a veteran deputy with twenty years on the force, stepped out of the vehicle, wiping sweat from his brow. He walked toward the scene with a heavy sigh, clearly annoyed at being called out to a routine traffic stop. Walker immediately stepped forward to brief his supervisor, eager to show off his initiative.

"Sergeant, I've got a suspect here who refuses to identify himself or give up the code to this locked case,"

Walker boasted, gesturing toward Walter. Sergeant Miller turned his gaze toward the handcuffed man standing by the dusty sedan. The moment his eyes fell upon Walter's face, Miller stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained from his face, leaving him pale despite the sweltering heat. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. He looked at the handcuffs binding Walter's wrists, then back to the legendary face of the man who had served as the State Police Commissioner for over a decade—the very man who had personally signed Miller's promotion papers before retiring.

"Walker,"

Miller whispered, his voice shaking with a mixture of terror and disbelief.

"Do you have any idea what you have just done?"
