Previously: When rookie Officer Nelson handcuffed a quiet driver on a deserted highway, he had no idea he was being used in a dangerous game of betrayal by his own corrupt Sheriff.

The Shadow of Betrayal

Before Officer Nelson could process William’s warning, a black department SUV roared down the highway, kicking up a massive cloud of dust as it slammed to a halt behind them. The door flew open, and out stepped Sheriff Thomas Sterling, William’s former deputy and the man he had once mentored like a son. But Sterling had grown corrupt, taking massive bribes to cover up a toxic waste scandal, and William held the evidence to destroy him.

Sterling walked toward them with a smug, arrogant grin, removing his sunglasses. He looked at William cuffed against the car and chuckled softly.

Well, well, William,

Sterling mocked.

I never thought I would see the great Sheriff Vance in handcuffs.

Nelson looked between them, his face turning pale.

Sheriff? You know this man?

the rookie stammered. Sterling ignored him, leaning close to William to whisper.

You should have stayed retired. The files you took are going to burn, and you are going to prison,

Sterling hissed. He pulled a small, sealed plastic bag of white powder from his pocket and held it up.

Look what we have here. Nelson, note that we found these illegal drugs in the suspect’s glove box.

Nelson stared in horror.

But Sheriff, I already searched the car. It was completely empty,

the rookie protested. Sterling’s eyes turned ice-cold as he stepped aggressively toward the young deputy.

Are you calling me a liar, rookie? You write it in the report, or your career is over today,

he threatened. Sterling reached for his radio to call a transport unit, confident in his victory. But William only smiled, pointing his chin toward the front of his sedan.

You always were too sloppy, Thomas. You forgot to check my grille,

William said softly. Hidden behind the dusty chrome was a live-streaming dashcam, broadcasting every word directly to the federal prosecutor's office. Realizing his career and freedom were finished, Sterling panicked and drew his service weapon, aiming it straight at William.
