Previously: When Jack risked his life to pull a drowning wolf from a frozen lake, he didn't expect the pack to surround him—or his bitter brother-in-law to arrive with a dark confession.

The Shadow of Betrayal

Jack lay frozen in place, expecting the pack to tear him apart. Instead, the wolves gathered around the shivering animal he had just pulled from the watery grave, nudging it with their noses. The largest of them, a massive alpha with a scar across its muzzle, stepped forward. It sniffed Jack’s frost-covered coat, letting out a low, vibrating rumble that felt more like a thank-you than a threat. But the fragile peace of the wilderness was suddenly shattered by the aggressive whine of a snowmobile engine. The vehicle slid to a halt near the edge of the ice, and Marcus, Jack's bitter brother-in-law, stepped off.

Marcus was holding a heavy iron wrench, his face twisted into a triumphant sneer. He had expected to find Jack's frozen corpse on the lake, a tragic "accident" that would leave the family's valuable timber land entirely in Marcus's hands. He had sabotaged Jack's snowmobile hours earlier, leaving him stranded in the path of an oncoming blizzard.

"I didn't think you'd make it this far, Jack,"
Marcus called out, stepping closer, completely blind to the dark shapes lingering in the thick mist behind Jack.

When Jack revealed that he knew about the sabotage, Marcus didn't deny it. He openly bragged about his plan, raising the heavy wrench to finish the job. But as he took a step forward, the mist parted, revealing the massive wolf pack standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Jack. The alpha let out a terrifying growl, and the wolf Jack had saved bared its teeth. Marcus froze, the color draining from his face as the heavy wrench slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the ice. He was completely surrounded by the wild protectors Jack had unwittingly allied with.
