The bitter Montana winter had turned Echo Lake into a vast, unforgiving sheet of glass. Liam, a seasoned outdoorsman who preferred the quiet solitude of the snow-covered wilderness to the noise of the city, was on his morning patrol when the silence was broken. It was a low, desperate cry—a sound of pure panic that echoed off the distant, snow-draped pine forest. Liam hurried toward the sound, his heavy boots crunching against the hard-packed snow.

When he reached the center of the lake, his heart leapt into his throat. A massive timber wolf was trapped in a freshly broken hole in the ice. The poor beast was clawing frantically at the slick edge, but its heavy, waterlogged fur was dragging it down into the dark, freezing depths.

Without hesitation, Liam slid down onto his knees near the cracking edge of the ice. He knew the danger. One wrong move, and the ice would give way, plunging them both into a watery grave.

"Easy, easy," Liam muttered, his breath billowing in white clouds. "I've got you."

The wolf, driven by survival instinct, snapped its jaws near Liam’s face. But Liam didn't back down. He lunged forward, grabbing the wolf’s frozen, wet paws. With a guttural roar of effort, he pulled with all his might.

"Come on, come on, you can do it!" he shouted into the freezing wind.

With one final, desperate heave, Liam threw his weight backward. The heavy wolf slid out of the hole and onto the solid ice, and Liam fell back, utterly exhausted. As he lay there panting, the mist parted. Out of the trees, the rest of the wolf pack emerged, their golden eyes locked onto the man who had just saved one of their own.
