Previously: When Lucas risked his life to pull a freezing wolf from an icy reservoir, he thought he was facing his final moments as the pack closed in. Instead, it was the start of an unbelievable bond.

The Hunter's Threat

Lucas braced himself, expecting the worst. But instead of attacking, the alpha of the pack stepped forward, nudged the rescued wolf, and cast a long, lingering look at Lucas. It was a look of profound, silent understanding. The pack then turned and vanished back into the snowy forest. Lucas returned to his cabin, shaken but deeply moved by the encounter. He hoped that was the end of it, but the wilderness has a way of testing a man's resolve.

Two days later, his neighbor, a ruthless local hunter named Marcus, arrived at the cabin. Marcus had noticed the wolf tracks and heard rumors of a pack roaming near Lucas's land. In Montana, there was a hefty bounty on wolves, and Marcus was determined to collect it.

"I saw the tracks, Lucas," Marcus said, his voice dripping with malice as he patted his rifle. "And I know you saved one of them. That's interfering with local wildlife management. You're going to help me find their den, or I'll make sure the sheriff takes your cabin."

Lucas refused to cooperate, warning Marcus to leave the animals alone. But Marcus only laughed, revealing that he had already set heavy steel traps all along the ridge. The next morning, Lucas’s worst fears came true when a haunting, agonizing howl echoed through the valley. It was the same wolf he had saved, caught in one of Marcus's brutal traps.

Lucas rushed to the ridge, only to find Marcus already there, aiming his rifle at the trapped beast. But Marcus hadn't realized he was surrounded. The rest of the pack had emerged from the trees, growling fiercely, ready to tear the hunter to pieces. Marcus was terrified, his finger trembling on the trigger as he screamed at Lucas to shoot the wolves.
