I Saved a Drowning Wolf From the Ice—Then Its Pack Trailed Me to My Cabin
A Frozen Rescue
The winter of that year had settled over the valley like an iron sheet. Lucas, a rugged outdoorsman who spent his life studying the local wildlife, knew the dangers of the frozen reservoir all too well. Yet, when a frantic whimpering echoed across the icy expanse, his survival instincts took a back seat to his humanity. Kneeling on the treacherous, cracking ice, Lucas stared down into a dark, freezing hole where a massive grey wolf was desperately fighting for its life.
The beast's fur was waterlogged and heavy, pulling it down into the dark abyss. Lucas didn't hesitate. He threw his weight backward, gripping the wolf's freezing, wet paws with his bare hands.
"Come on, come on, you can do it!"he screamed, his voice raw from the biting wind. Every muscle in his body strained against the dead weight of the drowning animal. With a final, agonizing surge of strength, Lucas dragged the wolf onto the solid ice, collapsing backward onto the frozen surface, gasping for air.

As he lay there, his breath rising in white plumes, a shadow fell over the ice. Lucas looked up to see a sight that made his blood run colder than the water. Emerging from the dense, misty fir forest was the rest of the wolf pack. They stood silent and majestic, watching him. Lucas braced for the worst, but the rescued wolf slowly stood, shook the freezing water from its thick coat, and trotted back to its family. The pack melted away into the trees, leaving Lucas alone in the freezing silence.
Shivering violently, Lucas made his way back to his isolated cabin, where his wife, Clara, immediately wrapped him in heavy wool blankets. But the relief of survival was short-lived. That night, a ferocious blizzard knocked out the power, and a strange, persistent scratching began at their front door.
