The hum of the airport terminal was deafening, a chaotic symphony of rolling suitcases, boarding announcements, and hurried footsteps. Sarah sat at Gate B12, her fingers nervously tapping against her paper coffee cup. Beside her, her ten-year-old son Leo was practically vibrating with excitement, his nose pressed against the thick glass window overlooking the tarmac. They were supposed to be on a flight to visit family, a quick escape from the suffocating tension that had filled their home lately. But fate had a different destination in mind.

A Mirror Image in the Crowd

"I'm going to get some water, Mom," Leo said, already wandering a few steps away toward the nearby vending machines. Sarah nodded absently, her mind drifting to her husband Richard, who had claimed a last-minute business emergency prevented him from joining them.

A sudden hush seemed to fall over Leo's direction. Sarah looked up, her maternal instincts instantly on high alert. She stood up, her eyes scanning the busy terminal until they locked onto Leo's beige coat. He had stopped dead in his tracks. Standing directly in front of him was another boy.

Sarah gasped, her coffee spilling over her fingers.

The boy was a stark contrast to Leo’s clean, well-pressed clothes. He wore ripped, filthy garments covered in dark soot, his face smudged with dirt. Yet, as Sarah drew closer, her heart hammered violently against her ribs. Underneath the grime was a face she knew better than her own. It was Leo's face. The identical light brown hair, the same shape of the eyes, the exact same slight curve of the chin.

"Wait... Why do you look like me?" Leo asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and fear. "I thought I was the only one."

Sarah ran forward, tears already blinding her vision. "Rowan! Oh my god, where are you?" she cried out, the name she had buried deep in her soul escaping her lips. She stopped in shock, her breath catching.

Leo pointed a shaking finger. "Mom, why does he have my same face?"

Sarah sank to her knees. She reached out, her hand brushing against a rusted, heavy metal tag hanging from a dirty string around the boy's neck. She lifted it, reading the crudely engraved words: BABY #2.

"Oh no..." Sarah whispered, the terrifying truth of a decade-long lie crashing down upon her.
