The Heir and the Imposter

The foyer of the Sinclair manor had witnessed a hundred power plays, but none quite like this.

Chloe knelt on the veined white marble, her twin pigtails brushing her shoulders as she clutched the embossed silver cylinder to her chest like a lifeline. The crystal chandelier cast a cold, clinical light across her dusty-rose pinafore, and I could see the tremble in her lower lip from across the room.

Diana stood beside the mahogany pedestal table, her plum velvet dress hugging every curve she'd used to charm her way into my life. She held the tampered hospital chart like a trophy.

"Sign the disinheritance papers now!" Her voice sliced through the silence, manicured finger pointing down at my daughter.

Chloe flinched. A single tear traced a path down her cheek, but she didn't make a sound.

I narrowed my eyes, studying the woman I'd once believed I loved. The diamond bracelet on her wrist — a gift from me, on our one-year anniversary — glittered as she slammed the chart again.

"Blood type B-negative," Diana announced, tilting her chin. "Neither parent has it. She's not yours, Xavier. I did you a favor by finding out."

The words hung in the air like poison. I felt the weight of them, the insult to my daughter's very existence.

Chloe looked up at me then, her glistening eyes meeting mine with a depth that made my chest ache. She whispered, so softly I almost missed it: "Unscrew the wooden chess king."

Diana's smirk faltered for just a fraction of a second. But she recovered quickly, crossing her arms. "Don't play games, little girl. This is about science."

"Hold everything," I said, my voice low and commanding. I stepped forward, my hand outstretched toward Chloe. "Open this dossier."

The silver cylinder was cold in my palm. Diana's eyes widened as I broke the seal under the bright light.

I pulled out the contents — an original neonatal heel-print card, worn at the edges, and a matching umbilical cord blood DNA profile. The lab's official letterhead was unmistakable. So was the 99.99% paternity match.

My gaze swept to the signed confession from the bribed lab technician, and my blood ran hot.

"Your forgery is completely exposed," I said, the words coming out like thunder.

Diana's face drained of color. Her hand flew to her throat, and a bead of sweat traced down her temple.

Behind me, I heard the heavy footsteps of uniformed officers entering the foyer. I wrapped my arm around Chloe's shoulders, feeling her small body tremble against mine.

"My child inherits everything today," I declared.

Diana let out a strangled cry as the officers seized her wrists, but I didn't watch her go. I knelt down, pressing my forehead to Chloe's, and whispered, "I'm so sorry."

She shook her head, tears streaming freely now. "You believed me, Daddy. That's all that matters."
