The Gala Under the Glass Dome

The Winter Garden Atrium glittered like a jewel box. Orchids the color of fresh cream spilled from marble urns, and golden string lights draped the wrought-iron arches overhead. Every guest wore diamonds, but none sparkled brighter than the man at the center of it all.

Gideon Vane was a legend in Los Angeles. The diamond cartel patriarch had built an empire from a single pawnshop on Sunset Boulevard, and at sixty-three, he still moved like a man who could crush you with a handshake. His silver hair was immaculate, his ivory dinner jacket impeccable. He was the kind of man who never raised his voice — because he never had to.

Beside him stood his five-year-old granddaughter, Ella. She was a small creature with golden curls and enormous blue eyes, wearing a starlight-blue tulle dress and white Mary Jane shoes. She was the only child at the gala, and she was trying very hard not to feel out of place.

Her mother had died six months ago. Ella didn't fully understand what that meant, but she understood that Grandpa Vane was the only family she had left. She also understood that the woman with the platinum pixie cut and the smug smile was not her friend.

Celeste looked like a Hollywood villain who had stepped out of a movie. Her metallic silver dress was backless, tight, and stretched dramatically over her rounded midsection. She was supposedly seven months pregnant with Gideon's son — the "true heir" to the empire. She touched her belly often, like she was showing off a trophy.

The truth of that belly would destroy her in minutes.

Ella saw it first. She was wandering near the VIP table, watching the grown-ups laugh and toast with champagne, when Celeste snapped at her. "Get away from this VIP table, you little beggar!"

The shrill voice cut through the chatter. Ella froze, her cheeks burning. "Tonight I'm carrying the only real male heir to this empire," Celeste continued, her lips curled with venom, "so you belong in the servants' kitchen!"

She swatted Ella's hand away with her diamond-encrusted clutch. The little girl stumbled back, tears pooling on her lower eyelids. But she didn't cry. She didn't make a sound.

"Grandpa… why is her tummy hissing like my pool floatie?"

It was a whisper, barely audible. But in that moment, the room seemed to hold its breath. Ella pointed a tiny, trembling finger at Celeste's rounded midsection. "Her diamond pin poked a hole in the rubber pillow under her dress!"

Celeste's arrogant smirk froze. Her face went white, then red, then white again. She clutched her belly protectively, but it was already too late. Gideon Vane had heard every word.

The patriarch stepped forward. His eyes were cold, calculating, deadly. He reached out and pulled the punctured, hissing flesh-colored silicone air-bladder right out from beneath Celeste's loosened satin sash.

The fake pregnancy pad deflated in his hand like a crushed balloon. He held it up under the chandelier light, letting every guest see it.

"You thought a Velcro foam cushion would fool me," he roared, his voice like thunder, "while you treated my flesh and blood like dirt?!"

Celeste's hands flew to her flattened gown. She looked around wildly, searching for an ally. Her brother Adrian, weak-willed as always, just stared at the marble floor. The bouncer, Derrick, took a half-step forward but stopped.

Gideon tossed the foam belly onto the crystal table. He wrapped his arm around Ella's shoulders and pulled her close. She pressed her cheek against his lapel and finally let the tears fall.

But she didn't cry for long. Because she knew, in the way that children sometimes do, that this was only the beginning.

The First Strike

Celeste's voice turned to a desperate whine. "Gideon, please — I can explain. I was going to tell you tonight, after the gala. I just wanted to give you a son. You always wanted a son —"

"I wanted a child," Gideon cut her off, his voice like ice. "Any child, from a woman who loved me. You gave me a foam cushion and contempt."

Adrian finally spoke, his voice shaking. "Celeste, what have you done?"

"Shut up, Adrian!" Celeste snapped. "You were supposed to help me!"

"Help you lie?" Adrian's face twisted with anger. "You told me this would make us rich. You said he'd give us a mansion and a trust fund. You never said anything about humiliating a child!"

Gideon's gaze swung to Adrian. "You knew about this?"

Adrian opened his mouth to deny it, but Celeste's laugh stopped him. It was a shrill, broken sound. "Of course he knew. He's my brother. We had it all planned — I'd show up pregnant, you'd marry me, and then I'd "miscarry" after we signed the prenup. But Adrian got greedy. He wanted a cut of the trust fund for himself."

"You're insane!" Adrian shouted. "I never —"

"You did," Celeste spat. "You told me to make it convincing. You said to hire a real actress to play the ultrasound tech. But I didn't need an actress. I just needed a foam belly and a lie."

Gideon's laugh was a low, dangerous sound. "A lie?" He shook his head. "You're about to learn the price of lying to me, Celeste."

He turned to Derrick. "You. You were paid to protect her tonight."

Derrick's face went pale. "Boss, I didn't know —"

"You knew enough," Gideon said. "You're fired. Get out of my sight."

But Derrick was a desperate man. He lunged forward, reaching for Gideon. "Don't come any closer, boss! I'm paid to keep your hands off her!"

Gideon intercepted the guard's wrist in mid-air. His forearm strike drove into Derrick's chest, sending the bouncer crashing to the carpet. The guests gasped. Somebody screamed.

Ella watched it all with wide eyes. She had never seen her grandfather move like that.

Gideon straightened his jacket and looked down at Celeste. "You have exactly one hour to pack your things and leave my house. If you're not gone, I'll have you arrested for fraud."

"You can't do this!" Celeste cried. "I'm the mother of your child!"

"You're a liar with a foam belly," Gideon said. "And you just made a very powerful enemy."

He turned to the crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the interruption. Please enjoy the rest of the evening. My granddaughter and I have some family business to attend to."

He scooped Ella into his arms and carried her out of the atrium. She wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, "Grandpa? Is she really the bad lady?"

"She was," Gideon said softly. "But she's about to learn that I'm worse."
