She Pretended to Be Paralyzed to Catch Her Greedy Cousin — Then He Grabbed Her Son
The Winter Garden Trap
The penthouse winter garden gleamed under a canopy of glass rafters, the twilight sky bleeding from rose to deep blue. Heated marble floors pulsed warmth beneath Evelyn Mercer's feet — only she wasn't supposed to feel them anymore. She sat motionless in a medical wheelchair, her dark ponytail sleek against the cream blazer, a foam neck collar fastened loosely around her throat.
Beside her, Trevor paced like a predator. The velvet blazer hugged his shoulders, and his slicked-back hair caught the last light of evening. He didn't bother to hide his smirk as he yanked the brass corporate seal off the desk, the weight of it settling in his palm like a trophy.

Eight-year-old Lucas stood near the bonsai trees, his striped polo shirt wrinkled from the day's tension. His chin trembled, but his eyes were fixed on the seal in Trevor's hand — the one that had belonged to the Mercer family for three generations.
"You're just a kid," Trevor said, not even looking at Lucas. "Don't get in my way."
Evelyn kept her face slack, her breathing shallow. Through her lashes, she watched every move Trevor made. The hidden camera in the bookshelf clock blinked red, recording his every word.
"The company belongs to me," Trevor announced, his voice slow and venomous. He turned to face Evelyn, flaring his nostrils in a sneer. "You hear that, cousin? You're useless now. Paralyzed. A vegetable. I'm taking what's rightfully mine."
Lucas stepped forward, his small fists clenched. Tears streamed down his flushed cheeks, but his voice was steady. "Put down that family seal!"
Trevor laughed, a cold sound that bounced off the marble. He raised his hand, palm open, ready to smack the boy aside. "Stay out of this, brat."
Evelyn's fingers moved behind her neck, slowly, silently. The velcro gave way with a soft rip, too quiet for Trevor to hear over his own boasting.
He lunged toward Lucas, his arm swinging. But before his hand could connect, Evelyn rose. The neck brace fell to the floor with a clatter. She caught Trevor's wrist mid-air, her grip like iron.
"Step back from my son," she said, her voice calm and steely.
Trevor's eyes dilated, his mouth falling open. He looked at her legs, at the discarded brace, at the cold fury in her eyes. "Y-you... you can't—"
Lucas gasped, stumbling backward. "Mom?"
Evelyn didn't let go. She held up her tablet with her free hand, the screen showing a live feed of the room — including Trevor's confession from minutes ago. "I was testing your loyalty."
Trevor's knees buckled. "It's not what it looks like. I was just—"
"Deputies," Evelyn said, her voice cutting through his stammer. "Haul him to jail."
Two uniformed officers burst through the double doors, their boots echoing on the marble. They snapped steel handcuffs onto Trevor's wrists, and he went limp, his head hanging in defeat.
Lucas ran to Evelyn's side, burying his face in her blazer. She wrapped her arm around him, holding him close as the officers dragged her cousin away.
"It's over," she whispered into his hair. "He's gone."
But as the doors swung shut, Trevor's voice echoed back: "You think you've won, Evelyn? Check the safe. Check the safe!"
A cold knot tightened in her stomach. She had planted the safe, but she hadn't inspected its contents since the setup. What had Trevor put inside?
