The Tide Turns
The silence in the ballroom was deafening. George’s face paled to a ghostly white, his arm frozen in mid-air as he stared at the legendary Admiral saluting a woman he had just ordered to be thrown out like garbage. Vivienne’s smirk evaporated, replaced by a look of sheer panic.
"Admiral, there must be a mistake," Vivienne stammered, stepping backward. "She is a nobody. Look at her back! She is disfigured, a common fraud!"
Admiral Vance slowly lowered his salute, turning a gaze so cold on Vivienne that she visibly flinched. His voice boomed through the high-ceilinged hall, carrying the weight of absolute authority.

"This 'nobody' is Captain Clara Sterling," Vance declared, his voice trembling with controlled rage. "And those scars you so ignorantly mock were earned when her convoy was ambushed in the Arghandab Valley. She dragged four wounded soldiers out of a burning vehicle while under heavy enemy fire. One of those men was my son."
A wave of shame washed over the guests who had just been whispering in disgust. George swallowed hard, his mind racing. He knew the Vance family wielded immense power, but more importantly, he knew the name Sterling. He stepped forward, his confident demeanor completely shattered, sweat glistening on his forehead.
"Captain Sterling... Clara, please accept my humblest apologies," George pleaded, his voice cracking. "We had no idea of your service. If there is anything we can do to make this right—"
"There is nothing you can do, George," Vance interrupted coldly. "Because Captain Sterling is not just a retired hero. As of yesterday, she has been appointed as the Chief Director of the Federal Defense Procurement Committee."
George felt the ground slip from beneath his feet. His entire multi-billion-dollar aerospace empire relied solely on government defense contracts. With one word from Clara, his company could be blacklisted forever.
