Previously: Fleeing a scandal that ruined her family, Elizabeth seeks refuge in a desolate winter town. When the local sheriff refuses to send her away, her dangerous past catches up with them.

The Shadow of the Past

For three weeks, Elizabeth found a peace she hadn't known in years. Charles provided her with a small room above the town’s dry goods store and gave her employment organizing the county’s disorganized land deeds. In the quiet evenings, they spoke of their pasts. She learned that Charles had lost his wife to illness years ago, leaving him with a quiet, hollow grief that matched her own betrayal. They were two broken souls finding solace in the quietest corner of the world. Elizabeth began to believe that the storm had finally passed, and that she might actually have a second chance at happiness.

That illusion was shattered on a Tuesday morning. The door to the sheriff’s office was kicked open with such force that the glass rattled in its frame. A blast of freezing air and snow swept into the room, followed by the heavy, confident footsteps of Thomas, Elizabeth’s estranged husband. Behind him stood three rough-looking men, their hands resting on the stocks of their rifles. Thomas looked prosperous in his tailored fur coat, a stark contrast to the rugged wilderness around them.

"Well, Elizabeth,"
Thomas sneered, his eyes scanning the room before locking onto her.
"You certainly made me chase you. Did you really think you could hide in this godforsaken freezer?"

Elizabeth shrank back against the wooden filing cabinets, her hands shaking.

"Thomas, please. I have nothing left. You took everything."

Thomas laughed, throwing a document onto Charles’s desk.

"I took what was mine. And now, I’m taking you back to face the charges. Sheriff, this is a federal arrest warrant. Step aside."

Charles didn't look at the paper. He slowly rose from his chair, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the room.

"I don't care much for papers signed by crooked judges in Illinois, mister. In this county, my word is the law, and this lady is under my protection."

Thomas’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, murderous glare. He signaled his men, who raised their rifles.

"Then your protection ends today, lawman."
