The Sheriff Who Saved Me From My Dark Past When Everyone Else Turned Away
Previously: When Rebecca fled to the freezing frontier of Montana, she expected handcuffs. Instead, Sheriff Joseph offered her shelter from the storm—and a secret that changed everything.
A Ghost from the Past
For two days, the sheriff’s cabin was a sanctuary of warmth and safety. Joseph asked no questions, and Rebecca offered no lies. But the peace was shattered on the third morning when the heavy oak door was violently kicked open, letting in a swirl of freezing snow and four armed men. At the front stood Silas, Rebecca’s ruthless husband, his face twisted in a triumphant grin.
"Did you really think you could hide from me in this frozen wasteland, Rebecca?"
Silas sneered, stepping inside and brushing the snow from his expensive fur coat. His hired guns fanned out, their hands resting on their holsever revolvers. Rebecca shrank back against the hearth, her heart hammering against her ribs. Joseph slowly rose from his wooden desk, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp as flint.

Silas threw a stack of papers onto the table. "I have a federal warrant for her arrest, Sheriff. And I have a thousand-dollar bounty for anyone who helps me bring her in. Step aside, or you'll find out how cheap life is out here."
Joseph looked at the documents, then back at Silas. "These papers are signed by Judge Henderson," Joseph noted calmly. "But the judge was arrested yesterday in Helena for bribery and fraud. Your warrants are worthless here, mister."
Silas’s grin faded, replaced by a cold, murderous glare. He signaled his men. Before Joseph could draw his revolver, one of the thugs lunged forward, striking the sheriff from behind with a heavy iron fire poker. Joseph collapsed to the floor, blood pooling on the wooden planks. Silas grabbed Rebecca by her hair, dragging her screaming into the freezing courtyard. "You're coming back with me to take the fall," Silas hissed. "Even if I have to drag your corpse."
