Previously: After escaping a toxic marriage with nothing but a carpetbag, Margaret seeks refuge in a snowy frontier town, only to find her past catching up in the most unexpected way.

The Ghost of the Past

Inside the sheriff's office, the crackling fireplace offered a temporary reprieve from the harsh winter. For a few hours, Margaret allowed herself to believe she was safe. Henry asked no probing questions, offering only hot coffee and a quiet respect for her silence. But the fragile peace was shattered the following morning when the office door banged open, letting in a gust of freezing air and a man Margaret hoped she would never see again.

It was Thomas, a ruthless mercenary who had long served as her husband Arthur's personal enforcer. Shockingly, a silver deputy's star was pinned to his heavy woolen coat. He had anticipated her flight and used his connections to secure a position in Blackwood, waiting like a spider in its web. When Thomas spotted Margaret standing by the hearth, a sneering, victorious grin spread across his face.

"Well, well, Sheriff," Thomas drawled, drawing his revolver with slow, deliberate malice. "It seems you've been harboring a fugitive. This woman is wanted in Boston for the murder of her brother-in-law."

Margaret’s blood ran cold. She turned to Henry, her eyes wide with terror. "He's lying, Henry! My husband framed me to steal my family's inheritance. Thomas helped him do it!" she pleaded, her voice cracking with emotion. But Thomas merely laughed, tossing a stamped arrest warrant onto the wooden desk.

Henry’s face hardened as he examined the official document. The warmth from the previous night seemed to vanish, replaced by the stern, unyielding mask of a lawman. He slowly stood up, reaching for the iron handcuffs hanging from his belt. He looked at Margaret with cold, unreadable eyes.

"Put your hands behind your back, Margaret," Henry commanded quietly.

Betrayal stung deeper than the winter wind. As Margaret reluctantly crossed her wrists, preparing for the worst, she noticed Henry’s fingers subtly brushing against the key ring in his left hand—a silent, hidden signal that told her this fight was far from over.
