The Sheriff Welcomed Me in the Freezing Snow When the Whole Town Demanded My Exile
Previously: When Rebecca was driven out of her home town in the dead of winter, she expected to perish. Instead, a quiet sheriff met her at the border with an unexpected offer.
A Truth Warmer Than Fire
Before Silas could pull the trigger, Joseph reached slowly into his heavy canvas duster. He did not draw a gun, but rather a thick, sealed envelope made of heavy parchment. He tossed it onto the table next to the governor's warrant. Silas glanced down, his sneer faltering as he recognized the elegant, hurried handwriting on the envelope. It was Thomas's handwriting.
Joseph looked at Silas, his eyes cold as ice.

"Thomas knew his mother and you were slowly poisoning him to keep him from leaving the ranch to Rebecca,"
Joseph revealed, his voice echoing in the tense silence.
"He wrote this confession and mailed it to me, his uncle, days before he passed. He knew you would try to frame his wife."
Silas went pale, his revolver trembling. The henchmen exchanged uneasy glances. Joseph stepped forward, completely ignoring the gun pointed at his chest. He explained that the territorial governor had already been informed of the confession and the forged evidence used to secure the warrant. At that very moment, federal marshals were riding toward Blackwood Valley to arrest Eleanor.
Realizing the game was entirely lost, Silas slowly lowered his weapon. He knew that any move against Joseph now would mean a date with the federal gallows. With a cursed whisper, Silas ordered his men to retreat, backing out of the cabin and disappearing into the falling snow, leaving Rebecca free at last.
Rebecca fell into a chair, tears of relief finally spilling over her cheeks. Joseph walked over, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. The storm outside continued to rage, but inside, the truth had finally brought warmth back to her frozen life. No matter how fierce the winter of betrayal may be, justice and a compassionate heart will always find a way to let the spring return.
