Previously: When Chloe's sister stood up at the wedding reception, Chloe expected a sweet toast. Instead, a hidden folder of documents exposed a betrayal that ruined her marriage before it even began.

The Mask Slips

Before I could even process the betrayal, Austin’s mother, Eleanor, stood up from the family table. She marched toward the stage, her diamond necklace catching the light. Instead of looking apologetic, her face was twisted in a snarl of pure arrogance. She snatched the microphone from Maya’s hand.

"Let’s not make a scene over a little business transaction," Eleanor announced coldly to the stunned guests. "Chloe, your father’s old land is just sitting there rotting. Austin did what was necessary to secure our family’s future. Frankly, you should be thanking him for taking charge."

I looked at the woman I had called my mother-in-law, utterly appalled. My own father had spent his entire life protecting that land, intending for it to be a sanctuary for our family. Now, it was being sold off to commercial developers to fund a gambling habit.

Austin let go of my waist, his loving demeanor completely vanishing. He sneered down at me, leaning in close so only I could hear. "You can cry all you want, Chloe, but the papers are already signed and registered," he whispered maliciously. "The sale is legally binding. The wire transfer goes through tomorrow morning, and as my wife, you can't do a damn thing about it. We are officially married, and half of your assets belong to me now."

Tears of humiliation and anger blurred my vision. The guests were whispering, some filming the disaster on their phones. I felt completely trapped, bound by law to a man who had stolen my father’s legacy. But just as Austin turned to walk away, a deep, commanding voice boomed from the back of the ballroom, cutting through the murmurs. My Uncle Arthur, a quiet man who had spent forty years as a high-profile real estate attorney, stood up and began walking slowly toward the stage.
