The Screaming in the Chapel

The air inside the wood-paneled funeral chapel of the Sterling estate was thick with the scent of lilies and heavy silence. Mia, a twenty-four-year-old maid, stood at the back of the room in her emerald green uniform and white apron, her hands trembling. On the silver stands at the front of the room rested a pristine white wooden coffin. Inside was Emma, the daughter of the wealthy Arthur Sterling. Mia had spent the morning preparing Emma’s body, but something had haunted her—the girl’s fingers had not been cold like ice, but faintly warm.

As the priest spoke, a sound cut through the solemn silence. It was a scratching, desperate and weak, coming from inside the coffin. Mia moved closer, ignoring the warning glares of the mourners. When she pressed her ear to the wood, she heard a faint, muffled cry for help. Panic seized her. She knew the family would never believe her, so she ran to the hallway, grabbed the heavy emergency axe, and stormed back into the chapel.

"Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" Mia screamed desperately, swinging the heavy axe into the white wood.

The chapel erupted into chaos. Arthur Sterling, a fifty-six-year-old man in a sharp black suit, rushed forward.

"Have you lost your mind?!" he roared.
Mia tearfully pleaded,
"I heard her! I heard her crying! I washed her hair this morning, her hands were warm."

Suddenly, a faint, muffled female voice whispered from the shattered lid.

"No... don't do this to me..."
Arthur’s face drained of color. Eleanor, Emma’s grandmother, stepped forward, touching the splintered wood.
"My God... Emma?" she gasped.
