Previously: When Natalie smashed a car window to rescue a suffocating baby in Los Angeles, she expected a grateful mother. Instead, she faced a furious woman hiding a devastating secret.

A Mother's Desperate Secret

As Amanda clutched her baby boy, Leo, to her chest, her body shook with violent, uncontrollable sobs. Natalie watched her, the initial anger in her chest beginning to melt into confusion. Amanda wasn't carrying shopping bags or a coffee cup; instead, her hands clung tightly to a crumpled paper bag from the pharmacy. Before Natalie could ask any questions, the sharp wail of a police siren echoed down the street, and a cruiser pulled up to the curb.

Amanda’s face drained of what little color it had left. "No, please," she whispered to Natalie, her eyes wide with absolute terror. "If the police take him, I'll never get him back. You don't understand what he's doing to us."

Sensing the woman's genuine despair, Natalie stepped between Amanda and the approaching officers. "Tell me what's going on," Natalie urged quietly. In a frantic, rushed whisper, Amanda revealed the nightmare she had been living. She was fleeing an abusive marriage. Her husband, Marcus, a powerful man with endless resources, had cut off her access to all their bank accounts the moment she packed her bags to leave.

"Leo has a severe neurological condition," Amanda sobbed, holding the baby tighter. "He needs daily medication, or he'll have seizures. The pharmacy refused to give me the refill without payment. I went inside to beg the manager, to plead for my baby's life. I left the AC running, but the car's electrical system must have failed. I was only trying to save my son!"

Natalie’s blood ran cold. The sleek black coupe wasn't a sign of wealth; it was a trap. Amanda had been locked out of her own life, left penniless and desperate to keep her child alive. Now, the police officers were stepping onto the sidewalk, their eyes scanning the shattered glass and the crying mother. Natalie realized that if she told the officers the strict truth, Amanda could be arrested for child endangerment, and Marcus would easily win full custody of Leo.
