Frederick’s smug smile vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, pale terror. He looked from the towering figure of the General to the armed security personnel stepping out of the SUVs. He tried to maintain his composure, clutching his clipboard like a shield.

"Sir, there must be some mistake," Frederick stammered, his voice losing its confident edge. "This is official government business. This man's files were flagged for discrepancies. I am simply following protocol."

General Carlton didn't buy the excuse for a single second. He took a step forward, his towering presence completely overshadowing the trembling auditor.

"I didn't ask for an explanation, son," Carlton said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I gave you an order. Pick up the coin."

With trembling hands, Frederick slowly bent down. His expensive slate-blue suit pants tight against his legs, he reached out and picked up the gold coin from the dirty concrete. He held it out, his fingers shaking violently.

Carlton took the coin, gently wiping the dust from its gold surface before handing it back to Ralph. The two older men exchanged a brief, knowing nod. They had served in the same unit decades ago, surviving situations far more dangerous than a corrupt bureaucrat.

The General then turned his full attention back to Frederick. He signaled to one of his aides, who stepped forward and handed the General a thick, manila folder.

"We've been investigating your department for three months, Frederick," General Carlton revealed, tapping the folder against his palm. "We know about the diverted funds. We know about the veterans whose lives you ruined to fund your lavish lifestyle. And today, you chose the wrong veteran to rob."

Frederick realized his entire world was about to collapse. The arrogance was completely gone, replaced by the desperate panic of a trapped animal.
