Previously: When a corrupt official tried to steal a decorated veteran's pension and threw his last gold coin into the dirt, he didn't realize who was arriving in the convoy.

Gregory’s smug smirk vanished, replaced by a pale mask of sheer terror. He looked at the imposing figure of the General, then at the disciplined security detail flanking him. The young bureaucrat began to stammer, his voice cracking as he tried to regain his composure. He quickly knelt down, his expensive suit trousers scraping against the dirty concrete, and retrieved the gold coin, holding it out with trembling fingers.

The Tables Turn

General Montgomery didn't take the coin immediately. Instead, he looked Gregory up and down with absolute disgust before snatching the coin. He wiped the city dust from its gold surface and gently placed it back into Bernard’s hand, offering a brief, respectful nod to his former soldier. Then, the General turned his full, terrifying attention back to Gregory.

"Who gave you the authority to put your hands on a decorated hero?" Montgomery asked, his voice dangerously low.

Gregory swallowed hard, gesturing wildly to his clipboard. "General, sir, you don't understand! This man is a vagrant. He was harassing me, demanding government funds without the proper documentation. I was simply protecting myself and state property."

Bernard remained silent, knowing better than to interrupt his former commander. The General reached out and snatched the leather clipboard from Gregory’s hands. He flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the official documents. As he read, the General’s jaw tightened. He didn't just find Bernard's missing file; he found a list of dozens of veterans whose pensions had been marked as "inactive" or "disappeared." Beside each name was a handwritten set of routing numbers pointing to a private offshore account.

"You thought nobody was watching," the General said, his eyes burning. "You thought these men had no one left to fight for them. You were wrong."
