Previously: When a corrupt official tried to steal a decorated veteran's pension and threw his last possession to the ground, he didn't realize a fleet of black SUVs was pulling up behind him.

The Noose Tightens

The arrogance drained from Richard’s face, replaced by a sudden, cold panic. He looked at the General’s chest, heavy with medals, and then at the imposing security detail flanking him. Trembling, Richard slowly bent down, his polished shoes scraping against the gravel as he retrieved the gold challenge coin and handed it back to Henry. Henry took it, his fingers brushing against the familiar metal that symbolized a lifetime of sacrifice.

"General, you don't understand," Richard stammered, attempting to regain his composure. "This man was harassing me. I was simply defending government property. He’s a vagrant who has been disruptive."

General Bradley didn't even look at the bureaucrat. Instead, he stepped closer to Henry, placing a firm, respectful hand on the veteran's shoulder. "Henry, it’s been too long. I see the rats in the administration have been busy while we were away." He then turned a cold, piercing gaze back toward Richard. "We’ve been monitoring your department for months, Richard. We knew someone was draining the veteran pension funds, redirecting millions into offshore accounts. We just needed the final proof."

"You have nothing on me!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking as he backed away toward the edge of the sidewalk. "You can't prove a thing!"

But General Bradley simply signaled to his aide, who held up a tablet showing real-time security footage of Richard's office being searched by federal agents. Realizing his empire of lies was crumbling, Richard grew desperate. He reached into his blazer and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive. It contained the only master keys to the stolen funds—without it, the money would be permanently locked away, leaving hundreds of veterans destitute.

"If you take one step closer, I’ll drop this down the storm drain!" Richard screamed, holding the tiny drive directly over the deep iron grate. "You'll never get the money back, and these old fools will get nothing!"
