A Smug Bureaucrat Shoved a Homeless Veteran, Unaware of Who Was Watching
Previously: When a corrupt official tried to steal a decorated veteran's pension and threw his last possession to the ground, he didn't realize a fleet of black SUVs was pulling up behind him.
A Soldier's Reflex
The tense silence on the street was deafening. The General's guards held their breath, their weapons lowered, knowing that a single wrong move would send the digital vault of the veterans' future into the dark, rushing waters of the city sewer. Richard sneered, believing he had finally found his leverage. He began to step sideways, planning his escape while keeping the drive suspended over the abyss.
But Henry, despite his age, still possessed the quick reflexes of a soldier who had survived the harshest battlefields. He looked at the gold coin in his hand, a symbol of courage and precision. With a swift, practiced motion, Henry flicked the heavy gold coin directly at Richard's face. The coin struck the bureaucrat right between the eyes with a sharp crack.

Startled and blinded by pain, Richard gasped, his hand flinching away from the drain. The flash drive slipped from his fingers, but before it could fall into the grate, Henry lunged forward, catching the plastic drive inches from the iron bars. He rolled onto the pavement, clutching the drive tightly against his chest as the General's guards instantly swarmed Richard, pinning him to the concrete.
"Got it, Sir," Henry gasped, holding up the drive as General Bradley helped him to his feet.
The General smiled, taking the drive and handing it to his tech specialist. "Excellent work, Sergeant. You're still the best marksman I ever knew." Within minutes, Richard was handcuffed and thrown into the back of a police cruiser, his career and freedom gone forever. The encrypted files were recovered, securing the pensions of thousands of retired servicemen and women who had earned every cent.
As the SUVs prepared to leave, General Bradley handed the gold coin back to Henry, saluting him with utmost respect. Henry saluted back, his eyes misting over. He had lost his pension for a brief moment, but he had kept his honor—and in the end, justice had prevailed. The true measure of a society is how it treats those who sacrificed everything to defend it.
