A Smug Champion Mocked A 74-Year-Old Woman, Until An Official Saw Her Real Name
Previously: When a cocky young shooter tried to humiliate 74-year-old Mildred at the local range, he thought it was an easy win. But one look at her registration form changed everything.
Amos stared at the signature: Mildred 'The Ghost' Vance. Decades ago, she had been a legendary marksman, a pioneer who had shattered records before suddenly vanishing from the public eye after a tragic accident claimed her husband. Landon’s father, Richard, who owned a rival corporate range and was sponsoring the tournament, pushed his way through the gathering crowd. He recognized the name instantly and felt a cold sweat break out on his neck. If Mildred competed, his son’s guaranteed victory—and the massive corporate sponsorship deal tied to it—would vanish.
The Desperate Disqualification
Richard snatched the registration form from Amos’s hands.
"She can't compete,"Richard declared loudly, his voice echoing over the murmurs of the crowd.
"The rules clearly state that former professional shooters are barred from this amateur-and-semi-pro event to keep the playing field fair. She is disqualified."

Landon grinned, crossing his arms in triumph.
"Hear that, lady? Go back to your knitting. Your time was up forty years ago,"he sneered. Amos looked torn, desperately flipping through the tournament rulebook. The crowd began to murmur in outrage, sensing the injustice. Mildred stood perfectly still, her face an unreadable mask of determination. She knew exactly what Richard was doing; he was terrified she would expose his son's lack of true skill.
But Mildred was not about to let them steal the fifty-thousand-dollar prize that would save her community range.
"Look closer at your own rulebook, Richard,"Mildred said, her voice cutting through the tension.
"The professional ban only applies to active professionals or those who have held a license within the last ten years. My license expired in 1984. By your own rules, I am fully eligible."Amos’s eyes lit up as he found the clause.
"She’s right,"Amos announced.
"The registration stands."
”Amos announced. "The registration stands."
