Previously: When a corrupt bureaucrat tried to steal a homeless veteran's last remaining dignity and pension, he had no idea who was watching from the convoy of black SUVs.

The General's Wrath

Julian’s smug grin vanished, replaced by a pale mask of shock. He looked from the heavily decorated officer to the armed security detail stepping out of the convoy. In a desperate attempt to salvage his dignity, Julian stammered,

"General, sir! This is a misunderstanding. This vagrant was trespassing and harassing our staff. I was simply removing him from the premises."

General Miller did not blink. He walked forward, his boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete, until he stood inches from the lawyer. The sheer presence of the decorated commander made Julian look incredibly small.

"I said, pick it up,"
General Miller repeated, his voice dangerously quiet.
"Pick up every shred of those papers, and then pick up that coin. You are standing in front of Sergeant Major Robert Vance, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. A man who saved my life in the mountains of Afghanistan while you were probably still learning how to lie."

The crowd that had gathered on the sidewalk gasped. Julian’s hands began to tremble violently. Realizing he had no choice, the high-priced lawyer sank to his knees on the dirty concrete. Under the watchful eyes of the General and the gathering crowd, Julian painstakingly gathered the ripped pieces of Robert's documents from the wet gutter. He then picked up the gold challenge coin and handed it back to Robert, his eyes darting away in shame.

But the humiliation was only the beginning. General Miller signaled to one of his aides, who stepped forward holding a thick black leather portfolio. "We didn't come here by accident, Julian," the General said, his voice echoing off the brick walls. "The Department of Veterans Affairs has been conducting a federal audit on your firm. We know exactly where Robert's pension went—and we know about the other fifty veterans you've defrauded."
