The Ghost of the Desert

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty expanse of the Nevada tactical range, waves of heat radiating off the gravel. Arthur adjusted the collar of his faded beige canvas jacket, his weathered hands steady as he walked toward the check-in counter. At sixty-six, his hair was thinning and grey, his face lined with the deep crevices of a life lived in the shadows. To the casual observer, he was just another senior citizen looking for a nostalgic afternoon.

Standing near the counter was Leo, a thirty-four-year-old active-duty soldier clad in pristine, high-end black tactical gear. Leo looked like the epitome of modern military precision, and his attitude matched his polished appearance. Seeing the older man approach, Leo smirked, nudging his companion. He leaned against the counter, his eyes scanning Arthur with blatant condescension.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

Leo’s mock laughter cut through the dry desert air. Arthur didn't flinch. Instead, he slowly reached down to sign the range registry, rolling up his right sleeve in the process. Revealed on his rugged forearm was a dark, faded tattoo of a black wolf, its jaws open in a silent, fierce howl. Leo glanced at the ink, folding his arms with a dismissive chuckle. He saw only a relic of the past, completely unaware of its true meaning.

Ignoring the disrespect, Arthur stepped up to the firing lane, lifting a heavy, scoped bolt-action rifle. He stabilized his breathing, aligning his sight with a target placed at an extreme distance. With a single, fluid motion, he squeezed the trigger. The thunderous crack of the rifle echoed off the canyon walls. Downrange, the steel target shattered perfectly in the dead center.

Arthur lowered the weapon, his stoic face completely unbothered as he turned to the younger man.

"I only need one shot."

Leo stared at the target monitor, his smug demeanor instantly evaporating. His face paled, his voice cracking in utter disbelief.

"What? Impossible!"
