The Arrogance of Youth

The Nevada sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty expanse of the military shooting range, baking the earth into a cracked, pale clay. At seventy-one, Arthur didn't move as quickly as he used to, his worn canvas coat heavy on his shoulders as he walked toward the registration counter. He just wanted a quiet afternoon, a moment to feel the familiar weight of a rifle and connect with a past he had spent decades trying to forget. But peace, he would soon find, was a luxury the young rarely afforded the old.

Standing near the counter was Cole, a thirty-one-year-old active-duty sergeant clad in a pristine dark combat vest. Cole was surrounded by his squad, laughing loudly, exuding the fragile confidence of a man who had never truly been tested by the horrors of war. As Arthur approached, Cole’s eyes locked onto the elderly man's weathered face and faded clothes. A smug smile spread across the young soldier's face.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Cole mocked, his voice carrying across the quiet range.

His squad chuckled, shaking their heads. Arthur remained silent, his expression as unyielding as the desert mountains. He quietly reached for his registration card. As he did, his sleeve slid back, revealing a faded, black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Cole laughed dismissively, folding his arms. "Go home, old man. This range is for real shooters."

Arthur didn't reply. Instead, he stepped up to the firing line and picked up a standard scoped bolt-action rifle. He chambered a single round, his hands steady despite his age.

"I only need one shot," Arthur said calmly.

He squeezed the trigger. A thunderous crack shattered the air, and downrange, the steel target at an impossible distance clanged loudly. Dead center. Cole's jaw dropped, his face turning pale. Just then, the range commander walked out, staring at Arthur's forearm. "That is the mark of the ghost unit," the commander whispered. A tear of sudden realization and shame rolled down Cole's cheek.
